At the Sussex Food & Drink Awards presentations Andy Hepworth was named the best ‘Sussex Drink Producer of the Year’. The award was made on the 28th January at a ceremony held at the East Sussex National Golf Resort and Spa in Uckfield.
‘Lager of the British Isles’ is the brand name being used to promote a group of British Micro Brewers that brew cask-conditioned lager. ‘British Lager Week’ is the first week in April 2010 with events taking place in both London - The Rake Inn, Borough & Brighton.
‘Dark Horse’ ABV 3.8% will make its welcome return in early March and remain until late May. The brewery have had great success with dark ales and ‘Dark Horse’ was no exception when it was first introduced in May last year. Continuing the dark connection, ‘Hepworth Old Ale’ has been the success story of 2009 and many pubs that would normally take ‘Harvey’s Old Ale’ have switched to Hepworth’s. Andy Hepworth regards this as praise indeed.

The 20% increase in production reported for the previous quarter has continued and the company is very buoyant; a fact that has been reflected in the Sales of Hepworth’s Seasonal Ales. Andy is happy that the hop harvest this year has been particularly good and as we go into Autumn, Hepworth will be launching Old Ale in October. Hepworth’s Sussex Bitter, in its bottled-conditioned form, as sold by Marks and Spencers, won the Silver Medal, for its class, in the International Brewing Competition and Hepworth’s Goodwood Organic Ale was “Highly Recommended”. The London half Marathon, to be held on October 3, is to have a bar operated by Hepworth. The Inn Brighton company will continue to feature Hepworth Ales for the next six months. Hepworth’s open- day on September 5th was very well received and Andy Hepworth was very impressed with the genuine local interest shown. There will be another open-day the same time next year.

Summer ale is particularly good. Bottles of Hepworth Pullman were recently seen at Dundee Station.

Hepworth Beers are likely to continue to be available at ASDA Stores, following the supermarkets decision to source more of its products locally.
The “Inn Brighton” Pub Co. will be featuring Hepworth beers in all their Brighton pubs during July ’09. Sales of draught ale continued to hold up during the second quarter of the year, and are 20% up on this time last year. Hepworth are again brewing the “Life Boat Ale”, in support of the National Life Boat Charity, adopted by the Ardingly Vintage Vehicle Show, taking place in July 09.
Hepworth’s link with the Goodwood Estate continues and this year’s “Glorious Goodwood” race meeting will see the company’s organic beer and lager available to race-goers. Also Hepworth will again be appearing at the G.B.B.F ’09 with the company’s Prospect Organic Pale Ale taking pride of place.
And finally, the railway station at East Penge, London is not usually associated with real ale, however, right next door is “The Holly Wood East”, a small pub that has attracted new custom by promoting Hepworth cask ale at £1.70 a pint.

Currently trading very well! The Malt Shovel in Horsham is a regular outlet for the beers. The brewery was at the South of England Show and expects to be at the Goodwood Festival of Speed again this year. (hope so, as I know I will get a good pint).
COUNTY TIMES - Business Awards 2009
Hepworth have been awarded the ‘Best Local Producer’ in the above prestigious awards.
Andy told the County Times - “We at Hepworths’ decided long ago to concentrate our focus on local suppliers and a local market - most of our ingredients are sourced in Sussex, and we’ve entered into strong relationships with our growers. “If we all help each other, we can be assured of the best quality and can offer the best value to our customers - no food mile wastage and total traceability.”
The award was presented by Roger Paterson, cabinet member for the local economy at Horsham District Council.
The 1000th brew (10 million pints) did occur at the end of January. Francis Maude, conservative MP for Horsham was present. The actual brew itself was Hepworth's ‘Blonde Lager.’
Draught cask ales are up 25% on this time last year.
Bottled beer sales are also up 10%
‘Old Ale’ sales have trebled.
Andy feels that locally brewed dark cask ale is popular with the younger drinker at this time. Consequently the brewery will be producing ‘Dark Horse’ 3.8% and will be available at the Mild Day at The Malt Shovel on the 2nd May. Also available at some pubs, during May, will be the famed ‘Old Ale.’
The Spring ale this year is ‘Super Horse’ at 6.1%
‘Summer Ale’ will be out in June.

Sales generally very good, particularly ‘Old Ale.’ Also bottled ales are performing higher than expected.
The 1000th brew is expected by the end of January. This translates to 10 million pints.
The brewery is in contention of winning the Sussex Drink Producer of the year award. Andy says that he rather hopes that the award goes to Harvey’s although he would like to win it.
Hepworth is the southern bottling centre for Marks & Spencer beers. Also bottled beers are selling well in Waitrose.
‘The Bee’s Mouth,’ Western Road, Hove, is selling Hepworth beers, especially ‘Iron Horse.’
01/09
Hepworth’s Autumn seasonal ale this year is ‘Harvest Ale’. A change from fuggles to target hops has boosted the hop taste and produced a very hoppy ale of 4.5% ABV.
Despite the weather, Hepworth’s barley harvest is good and safe this year; that also applies to the hop harvest.
Bottled beer sales continue to do well and draught sales are ‘holding up’. The SIBA Link to various pubs in SW London is helping in this regard as Hepworth Ales are proving to be very popular in that area.
