The LocAle initiative was started by the Nottingham Branch of CAMRA in 2007 because their local brewery Hardy & Hansons was bought out by Greene King and subsequently closed down.
Whilst the campaign started in Nottingham it was then adopted by CAMRA and rolled out nationally.
The whole essence of the campaign is to promote local breweries and reduce ‘beer miles’ from the brewery to the public house. This addresses the whole subject of the environment and ‘green issues.’
In this way the CAMRA branch and the participating pub can generate and sustain the local economy.
Each branch decides the distance from each pub that they relate to ‘beer miles.’ North Sussex have agreed that this distance should be 25 miles.
Currently, the following pubs have been accredited with LocAle. To participate, the requirement is that only 1 beer is consistently provided. If the landlord wishes to sell more, that is their choice.
