The Crown - Turners Hill - supported Cask Ale week and ran a Real Ale Quiz. Beer quality excellent.

The Lynd Cross - Horsham - recently started vacuuming and mopping up whilst there were people in the pub, and the staff did not know which beers were on. The bell for time was rung too early and the customers were asked to leave as the bar staff ‘wanted to go home.’ They were also told that they were breaking the law, when they were still drinking at 22:45.
Tim Martin has been written to and a response received.

Kissingate Brewery - there will be an open day later on in the year.

CLOSED PUBS - 24th after 9:30pm - Surrey Oaks, Newdigate (off area), The Plough Inn, Rusper, where the young woman asked if more than one pint required as they wanted to close, so left, The Star, Rusper.  Member then repaired to The Lamb Inn, Lambs Green where the pub was packed out. This is a double whammy for the pubs as they may not have much custom at certain times, if this was the reason for closing, but if they close potential customers will not in future consider calling in!

01/10

Surrey Hills Brewery - Shere - during the first half of 2010 the brewery will move to Denbies Vineyard at Dorking. The move will enable a larger brewery to operate and winter access will no longer be a problem as it is currently at the Scotland Farm location. The Press release  -
“The move to Denbies would encompass the installation of a new efficient brew-plant, this enabling the brewery to significantly reduce the water and electricity usage. Water is used for cleaning, and thus the number of cleaning cycles will be substantially reduced because of the larger brew-plant.
The Denbies Estate has the additional opportunity to grow hops as an agricultural crop thus further enhancing the agricultural viability of both the Estate and the future of the brewery in this proposed location. Additionally two new jobs will be created.”

The Crown - Horsted Keynes - reopened as a pub on the 21st November 2009 after suffering a lightning strike to the roof in July 2003. The pub is offering B&B accommodation.

The Royal Oak - Rusper - article in the County Times 11th Dec highlighting the pub reaching the final four, for the second year, of the ‘Pub of the Year.’ Final decision to be taken mid February.

Welton's - Land of Liberty, Peace & Plenty (out of area) - Heronsgate (near Chorleywood) - Dreadnought was available last Saturday (28th Nov). it was highly regarded by the discerning clientele. (the pub was a runner up for national pub of the year 2 or 3 years ago).

The Dorset Arms -  East Grinstead - now reopened after refurbishment. The interior has been divided up quite tastefully and is now less like a barn.
Current beers: Greene King IPA, Morland Original, Abbot, Rocking Rudolph. The Abbot was good but served too cold.

12/09

The Wise Old Owl - Kingsfold - the present tenants have been in residence for five years and have now bought the freehold. Changes will be made to make the ‘pub the very best it can be.’
There will be a cheaper and value-packed menu. The fish & chip takaway will remain. Also there is a large TV screen in the bar area for screening major football games. Also there will be an external refurbishment. Yesterday, the 30th Nov there were Dark Star Hophead, Flowers IPA and W J King Horsham Best on pump. The Hophead was superb!    Whilst this is a great turnaround from what had become a restaurant / pub I feel that the pub area needs enlarging as it is currently very small; the restaurant is of considerable size and the deli shop of course took away a sizeable part of the bar area seating. We look forward to seeing what develops.

The Royal Oak - Rusper - Sara & Clive celebrated their 3rd anniversary at the pub on the 24th Nov. The pub was packed out with customers. We all wish them well for the future.

Dorset Arms - Withyham - change to the GBG entry, the pub is now open Monday lunchtimes (same hours as rest of week) and meals are available. However, there is no food Monday evenings, as current.

The Dragon - Colgate - Hall & Woodhouse - on Tuesday 24th the pub will be closing as the landlord leaves refusing to take up a three year tenancy after his initial 1 year tenancy expires. H & W state that they will reopen the pub when a suitable business partner is found.  The outgoing landlord says that  he gets little support from the local community, the rates are too high, also the smoking ban, the economic climate, an aging drinking population all contribute!     I would suggest that another possible factor could be the fact that Dorset beers from H & W do not sit particularly well with Sussex drinkers. The best possible solution would be for this lovely pub to become a free house and develop along the lines of The Royal Oak at Rusper. (ex H & W). This pub would then, I believe, become a true community pub.

The Royal Oak - Friday St, Rusper - has reached the final four of the ‘Pub of the Year’ competition for the second time. Sara & Clive celebrate their 3rd anniversary at the pub on Tuesday 24th November.

Queens Head - Barns Green - had two casks of Hepworths Old on stillage on the 15th.

The Dorset Arms - East Grinstead - noted on Saturday 14th that the pub has reopened.

Sussex Oak - Blackham - is closed, the car park entrance off the A264 is blocked with bits of tree trunk, but lights are on in the living accommodation, so obviously there’s people living on the premises. Any information please to the webmaster under contacts.

The Dorset Arms - East Grinstead - is closed and the frontage stripped down.

The Royal Oak - Crawley Down - has been sold to a friend of the previous owner. He has already installed a pool table, darts board and large screen TV, although he doesn’t have Sky Sports. He is trying to appeal to a younger crowd.

Rose & Crown - West Green, Crawley - Police win battle to close Crawley pub at hearing 9th September. A pub described as one of the worst in Crawley has been closed for three months to "prevent crime" and "protect children".
The Rose and Crown, in Ifield Road, West Green, must shut within two weeks after police won a legal battle with the pub's landlord and owners.
Landlord Sean Reynolds also lost his personal licence, meaning owners Enterprise Inns will have to find a new publican.
Crawley Police applied for permanent closure to "prevent crime and disorder" and "protect children from harm".
Speaking at last Wednesday's licensing hearing in the civic hall, the police's barrister Peter Savill, said the pub was "fundamentally badly run."
He said: "This is a very serious case.
"It is one of the worst premises in the Crawley area."
"The police say enough is enough."
Mr Savill told the hearing police were frequently called to the pub and on one occasion, found a man and his stepson throwing tables and chairs at each other.
He added: "People like that should be banned but they are welcomed at the Rose and Crown."
In December 2006, the pub was ordered to close for a month following "extreme disorder" and Mr Reynolds took over when it re-opened.
But Mr Savill said nothing had changed and the pub had been given six warnings since Mr Reynolds arrived, including two for selling alcohol to underage police cadets sent in on test purchases.
Mr Reynolds said: "I have always worked very hard with the police and I think the only thing that's really let us down is the two incidents of serving underage people which I am very disappointed about.
"I will not have drugs in my premises and I will not have underage people in my pub drinking.
"These children aren't children anymore. They dress in such a way that it's very hard to tell anymore.
"If you don't look 25 you do not get served unless you have ID."
Responding to police claims he employed a barman who was subject to an alcohol banning order, meaning he could not buy or attempt to buy drink, Mr Reynolds said: "The man hasn't been in trouble with the police in the last two years.
"I didn't think it was wrong to give him a chance.
"Is there anything in this order which says he should be treated as an outcast because of his condition?"
Councillor Keith Blake, who led the three-man licensing panel, said Mr Reynolds had proved himself "inadequate" as a licence holder.
He said the three-month closure would provide a "significant break for those who currently attend the Rose and Crown."
The pub was ordered to close within 21 days of last Wednesday's hearing.
Mr Reynolds plans to appeal. (Info Crawley News   www.thisiseastgrinstead.co.uk
